In 1975 and 1976 the Joseph E. Seagram & Sons Company, under the direction of Phyllis Lambert, commissioned twenty-four photographers to photograph American county courthouses to commemorate the American Bicentennial. The work was published by Horizon Press in 1978, as a large format book titled Court House: A Photographic Document, edited by Richard Pare. The archive of the project is in the Prints and Photographs Division of the U.S. Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Technical note: All images were photographed with a 4 x 5 view camera. I photographed court houses in Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Northern California and Idaho. For prints from the original negatives, contact Ellen Land-Weber. Click on a picture to see an enlarged view.
