The Marsh Seen Closely The backgrounds to the 2007/2008 Marsh Seen Closely series of photo collages are scanning electron microscope enlargements I made of highly magnified details of plant structures found in the buds and flowers of Arcata Marsh trees, shrubs, and other greenery. If I was a trained botanist, I would be able to recognize the function of these structures. Unfortunately, I cannot. Being an artist, I look for details that are suggestive, evocative and beautiful. I take pleasure in the manner that these magnifications evoke strange landscape settings. The titles reflect the season I collected the specimens. The birds do not belong in the Marsh in any conventional sense. They were found in a 19th century bird book published in Hungary. Placing them in the Arcata Marsh seems appropriate as our world shrinks and climate changes. This work was featured in three exhibitions in 2008 and 2009. Click on a picture to see a larger view. |
